Hangout #1: “What's up with Catalonia? The awakening of an ancient nation”
The Public Diplomacy Council of Catalonia launches its first Google+ Hangout as part of its digital diplomacy.
The Public Diplomacy Council of Catalonia is beginning a series of Google+ Hangouts that are meant to explain the on-going political process that we are living in Catalonia, as well as to talk about other issues of global interest where Catalonia can offer some knowledge that might be useful.
Google+ Hangouts are an on-line resource that broadcasts a live discussion or conversation that allows for the simultaneous participation of people from all over the world.
Our first Google+ Hangout focused on Catalonia´s right to decide its political future as regards Spain and Europe, as well as the "human chain" or "Catalan Way," planned for Catalonia´s national day on 11th September 11. It was moderated by journalist Teresa Turiera, and was done in English, with the participation of the U.S. editor Ms. Liz Castro, author of the "What´s Up with Catalonia?" book; the U.K. author Mr. Matthew Tree, who wrote "Barcelona, Catalonia: A View From The Inside", and Mr. Ülo Laanoja, a former Member of Parliament for Estonia and former Vice-President of the Estonian Social Democratic Party. Ülo was one of the organizers of the 1989 "Baltic Way" linking citizens from Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia prior to their Independence from the former Soviet Union.
For Liz Castro "the Catalan Way will show the world the power a peaceful demonstration like this can have." Matthew Tree added that "the human chain on 11th September won´t be ignored internationally, just as last year´s 11th September march, the largest march anywhere in Europe in recent times, drew the world´s attention to Catalonia.
Ülo Laanoja believes that "the Catalan Way will open society´s eyes and the world´s media to a problem happening in Spain, where in the 21 century this democracy hasn´t yet allowed a referendum to be scheduled so that the Catalan people can decide their future."
This is the first of a series of Google+ Hangouts that the Public Diplomacy Council of Catalonia has planned to allow for more on-line discussions brining in experts from a variety of sectors and countries on the future of Catalonia and other areas of global interest.
The Hangouts are broadcast live on the Google+ website, and afterwards the Hangout will be available on the Public Diplomacy Council´s You Tube channel.
Anybody can participate in the conversation by sending in questions and offering their views via Twitter. In the case of this first Hangout, called "What´s Up With Catalonia? The Awakening of an Ancient Nation" the hashtag to follow is #AwakeCat.
