Portbou | Homage to Walter Benjamin
Wim Wenders, Dani Karavan and Chantal Benjamin participated in the event
Portbou City Council and the Associació Passatges de Cultura Contemporània, in cooperation with the Public Diplomacy Council of Catalonia (DIPLOCAT) and the Government of Catalonia, with the support of the Diputació of Girona, organised a commemoration to Walter Benjamin, one of the most eminent philosophers of the XX Century, in Portbou, one week after the 75th anniversary of his tragic death in this town at the French border. The German Jewish Philosopher took his life on 26.09.1940, when finding out that he was not able to continue his flight through Spain, but was to be sent back to the Nazi regime.
The German film maker Wim Wenders, the Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan, who created the Walter Benjamin memorial Passages in Portbou, as well as the granddaughter of the Philosopher, Chantal Benjamin, was present at the wreath laying ceremony at the Cemetery of Portbou on 4 October. At this occasion, a commemorative plaque was unveiled, showing the last letter Walter Benjamin wrote to Henny Gurland and Theodor W. Adorno before his death. The ceremony ended with a harp concert and reading of texts of the philosopher.
